Stanley Cup collectibles have arrived
Every young ice hockey player in the world dreams of being on the National Hockey League team that wins the prestigious Stanley Cup. And with ice hockey gaining increasing popularity every year around the world the new Stanley Cup Hockey Mugs Vending Capsules will be a hit everywhere kids frequent.
These 2” ceramic mugs have the logos of several of the winning teams, like the Montreal Canadiens, the Edmonton Oilers and the Colorado Avalanche.
These collectible mugs are keepers not just because the Stanley Cup is ice hockey’s yearly championship trophy, but also because it’s the oldest professional sports trophy in North America and the only professional sports trophy that has the names of the winning team’s players, coaches, management and staff engraved on its chalice as well as its rings and base.
The first Stanley Cup was originally called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup and was donated by the Governor General of Canada Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892. The name was later change to the Stanley Cup in 1915 by the then two professional ice hockey organizations, the National Hockey Association (NHL) and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA). After several league mergers it became the de facto championship trophy of the NHL in 1926.
There are several regulations governing the cup. First the trophy winners must return the cup each year in good order so it can be handed over to the next year’s winning team. Secondly the winning team, at their expense, may have the club name and year engraved on a silver ring that fits the cup. And, the cup can never become the property of any one team.
Many traditions are associated with the Stanley Cup. The oldest started in 1896 when the winning team drank champagne from the bowl after their victory. After the 1950’s the tradition began of presenting the cup to the team captain on the ice, followed by each member of the winning club carrying the trophy above their heads and skating around the rink.
